Chuck over at 1441 Gear hooked us up with one of their Paratus 2.0 OWB holsters. To be honest, when I first took it out of the package, I thought it was for the wrong gun. That dual sweat shield on the inner and outer side of the holster make it look like a bigger holster which I thought would be bad at first. It fit my Springfield Armory XD Mod 2 great…in fact, better than great. The design with the Paratus plate on the slide side of the holster forces the belt to hold the holster closer to my body. I was able to get this gun to sit about ¼” closer than my other OWB Kydex holster.
I wore it for about a week just seeing if there were any uncomfortable positions and I couldn’t find any. Getting in and out of a sedan or truck was no problem. Woodworking, setting up a tent, bathing a dog, crawling from couch to couch looking for my daughters favorite head band (she’s 2 and I’m an awesome dad). Seriously…the only issue was feeding the belt through that Paratus plate was a little tough…but not anymore than any other Kydex holster I have.
With the comfort check done, I wanted to see how it actually performed with draws from concealment. I was able to head to some family property and run this through its paces. I tried some 1×1 drills (I’m not sure if this is the right name, but I draw and fire one round which locks the slide back, then I reload with a one round magazine and fire an additional round). Not only was the draw great, but the reholstering was great. The full sweat shield on the outside acted like a funnel if you will and helped force the gun in the proper place during the reholstering process.
I then ran some transition drills where I fired a rifle, transitioned to the pistol and then transitioned back to the rifle. Again, that full sweat shield really assisted in reholstering and made the transitions better.
Full disclosure, 1441 Gear sent us this holster for free, but I really did fall in love with it. I will be purchasing another Paratus 2.0 for my duty gun and…oh wait…I almost forgot the drop holster! That one went to Joe for a review, if he ever gets that belt Walsh promised him. I’ll just say that the entire team was jealous and we all decided to purchase one for personal use.
