So we wanted to share our experience with the 224 Valkyrie so those that are interested in this platform are fully educated.
We started out by using some very cheap off the shelf ammunition in the hopes that the round would perform well without any super special ammo. We were very wrong. And the reason we were wrong caused us some huge frustration.
The round is just horribly inconsistent. You can have 3-4 shots that are touching then have one round that just goes off where ever. Up, down, left, right…you have no idea. There will always be a round somewhere soon that will just travel randomly.
So we start to play with some different ammo types to try and find something the 224 Valkyrie barrel likes better. We see some conversations on line about the barrel liking the berger projectile better. So we talk with Jason and he mixes up a ladder load that are the american eagle casing and powder, but then with the berger projectile recommended on the forums.
The results were….underwhelming. At the same time this was happening, federal actually released their own bullet that used the same berger projectile. These rounds were not cheap but we figured it would be the easiest way to test the projectile vs our ladder loads.
The federal berger rounds were horribly bad. Like a shotgun blast bad.
So we keep on after seeing the 224 Valkyrie as the “laser” round. We are just trying to make a platform that can shoot 1000 yards. Now this platform can likely do that…..1 in 10 times, so I don’t think that counts.
We continue to mix up a few more hand loads in an attempt to find a different setup that may work. The conditions were particularly poor but the round performed exactly as it always does…..the king of inconsistency
We AGAIN had rounds that would stack on top of one another and then another that would seemingly fly off the paper in a random direction.
This caused us to give up hope on the 224.
So we swapped everything around and picked up a 6mm ARC barrel. Now we can try and see if this new round can actually hit 1000 yards consistently or if it is just another gimmick round.
We upgraded from the 20″ 224 Valkyrie barrel to the 22″ 6mm ARC barrel for some added velocity. We also used the VG6 PRS65 muzzle device along with a matched 6.5 grendel bolt.
Stay tuned to see if we can turn this budget gun into a 1000 yard monster with the 6mm ARC!
