After having such horrible results from our 224 valkyrie build we reached out and got a 6mm ARC barrel to hopefully get better results.
We moved over to 6mm ARC to try to chase that rabbit reaching out to 1000 yards reliably and consistently. The barrel used in this series is 22 inch, the previous 224 Valkyrie barrel was 20 inches long.
Having not shot 6mm ARC I was unsure of what magazine feeds the round correctly. The casing for the 6mm ARC is based off the 6.5 grendel so 6.5 grendel magazines should work but we don’t have those. I did have my 224 magazines which uses a 6.8 SPC follower and had no issues.
We wanted to see what this cartridge could do with some off the shelf ammo so we picked up some Hornady Match 108gr and Hornady Black 105g. These were honestly the only rounds we could find on the shelf to even test.
Starting at the range we began by following the manufacturer’s barrel break-in. I think there some opinions on if the barrel break-in does anything or if its really needed. But, we wanted to ensure the most accurate barrel possible so we followed all of the recommended break-in from the instructions with the 6mm ARC barrel from Shaw.
The shots definitely did seem like they were tightening up as I was breaking in the barrel and getting used to the rifle recoil.
First groups were extremely exciting. The round and cartridge is absolutely capable at sub-MOA at 100 yards which is exactly what we wanted in this platform. This is what the 224 valkyrie was not.
We then reached out to 300 yards and the groups stayed nice and tight. The biggest thing to not was that there was not a crazy flier that just goes wherever it wants like it did at on the 224 valkyrie. The first groups need some adjustments and the follow-up shots were hitting around 300 yards with an adjustment of only 0.8 mils. That small amount of adjustment is exciting.
The Athlon argos scope we are using does not give a lot of adjustment and going out to 1000 will likely require full adjustment and still needing to use holdover.
We didn’t experience any failures or malfunctions in any of the series of fire on the 6mm ARC. Everything fired flawlessly and we were very impressed by what you do with 6mm and just regular 6mm ARC ammo.
Overall thoughts? We really loved the results of the 6mm ARC and found it to be extremely accurate. This is everything the 224 valkyrie was not.
So what’s next? We take this thing out long range and start working some load development. Keep an eye out on this 6mm ARC to see what happens as we work our way out to 1000 yards and watch Joe ring that gong for the first time!
