We begin by taking a look at all of the features on that come standard with the Grey Ghost Gear Laminate SMC. The first thing that is huge is that it all comes together. You don’t have to try to hobble together a proper assortment of gear like other carriers. You just buy it and you’re done.

The front of the plate carrier really impressed me with Grey Ghost’s forward thinking. The top portion of the carrier is both molle and loop. So you can connect all of your gear in either fashion you require. Below that portion is a large area of laser cut molle followed by the main area that again uses the hook and loop and molle. This allows you to easily use molle panels or use front plate placards. It has the connection points to expand however you want.

The rear of the plate carrier has the same forward thinking and amazing design. The entire back panel is laser cut molle to allow for any sort of attachments. A lot of new carriers only place molle in locations for their proprietary back panels which is quite infuriating. The rear panel also uses a standard zipper to connect to normal issued rear panels. It’s nice to see Grey Ghost Gear not use some ridiculous proprietary rear zipper setup.

Moving to the cummerbund, the innovation keeps going. The whole setup uses tubes design to quickly connect and disconnect the plate carrier. The cummerbund also features a pouch for a 6×6 plate along with openings to connect up molle items both on the inside and outside of the mesh cummerbund panel.

Often times the shoulder pads can be the make or break area for a plate carrier. The Grey Ghost Gear SMC has pads that are built in so you don’t need to buy extra bits or get surprised by a single toilet paper sheet of fabric that the company tries to call a shoulder pad.

The shoulder pads also use the tubes design to allow for emergency doffing of the plate carrier. This is huge for those that want to use the Grey Ghost Gear SMC for duty use.

We then put the plate carrier through a series of test and began with looking at all of the available colors the Grey Ghost Gear SMC is available in. We also looked at the shoulder adjustment and the total adjustment range of the plate carrier.

I found the expansion test to be the most exciting as it interfaces with all common connection points. This means that all the other gear from other carriers and issued gear also interfaces into this carrier. This small bit of foresight was extremely smart.

We then continued our tests with the rifle shoulder weld test and the prone comfort test.

The Grey Ghost Gear SMC plate carrier ended up being an absolutely great option for those who are looking for a multi-mission carrier that can adapt and transform in an instant.
