The first part of starting our Defense Mechanisms placard is to decide on which base to use. There are multiple different bases that all serve different purposes. The first style is an SMG mag base that offers you the ability to connect in various pistol caliber mags. The two different size bases fit the different identified mags and all the information is on the website to aid you in which size you need.
Another base option is the buildable base option. This gives you a blank canvas to connect up anything and everything you may possibly need. Want just a mag a radio? Or two pistol mags and two rifle mags? This is the one to go totally crazy with.
Next is the kangaroo base. This allows you to connect into your plate carrier with a molle front to connect mags into or you can use the inner pouch to store all of your mags
And the last base currently available is the 3 mag rifle base. This comes in 3 flavors, the 3 mag base, 4 mag base, and 3 mag armalite 10 base.
On each placard you also have the ability to select which clips to use from the GTRS latches to connect into the various placard setups or the g-hooks to connect into molle style connections or carriers without placard integration.
The next base option is the placard height. The short is quite short and I got the wrong size. If you have a commercial carrier, you likely want the optimized ride height. Take the time to measure to make sure you’re getting the correct size.
Once you have a solid base, you could just stop here and add a placard wrap but it’s way more fun to see what else is available.
The Defense Mechanisms team also offers an absolute ton of affordable pouches you can add to really customize your placard setup. Adding in radio pouches, half zippered pouches, full zippered pouches, or additional mag pouches is incredibly easy.
And the best part of the whole process is that everything is available. As it IS made to order, the wait is approximately two weeks but it also means you’re not playing the world’s most annoying scavenger hunt just to find your gear in stock.
The last step of all of the placards involves the placard wrap. The wrap comes in two sizes and the size of the wrap is based on the size of your placard base. Additionally, the placard wrap page shows which size wrap fits on which size base to remove any confusion.
There are 3 different styles for the wrap also. The slick front, the molle front, and the hook and loop front. To connect the base, you’ll want to load the pouches with gear so you know the approximate level of tension to apply. Then firmly wrap the placard wrap around your customized setup to finish the assembly.
At this point, you can also add the Defense Mechanisms sidekick pouches to expand the function of the placard system. Each sidekick pouch also has a super smart divider system to allow the pouch to work in either a left hand or right hand orientation, removing the need to buy two of each pouch.
The sidekick pouches can also be removed from the exterior and placed inside the placard to further customize your placard assembly options.
Defense Mechanisms also use their own dangler pouch for medical equipment called the direct impact pouch. The direct impact pouch comes in 3 sizes and each size includes a listing of the gear that fits cleanly and easily inside that pouch. So if you know what medial gear you want, it’s easy to see which pouch it’s all going to fit in.
By adding the direct injury pouch to the placard and sidekick pouches, the entire system brings some dynamic mission capabilities that show Defense Mechanisms really thought through their approach to these products.
Hopefully, this review was helpful in your purchasing decision as I know it was for me. I’m just going to build a bunch more of these!
