In this review we take a look at the Primary Arms 1-6 Raptor SFP and the Primary Arms 1-6 Raptor FFP. Our entire team is new to the LPVO world so we want to share our thoughts on what we thought of first focal plane vs second focal plane.
In a first focal plane scope, the reticle is going to change size the magnification of the scope. While the second focal plane scope will have a fixed reticle. This may seem like a gimme on which one you would want, but it is actually more challenging than you would think.
The Primary Arms 1-6 optics come in the same housings so they are mostly the same. The only differences in the optics are the way the reticle behaves during magnification and the actual reticle design itself.
I broke down the test into the three different states the PA Raptor 1-6 scopes are in.
1. 1 times magnification
2. 6 times magnification
3. Those in between spaces
We look at each of the categories and see how they behave and what our preferences are.
We began with the 1 times magnification and identified the pros and cons between first focal plane and second focal plane. Here is where the second focal plane shines due to the large reticle.
At 6 times magnification both reticles are very large. The glass is very clear on both scopes and the reticles themselves can be seen easily at full magnification. The question then becomes if you prefer the Primary Arms 1-6 Raptor FFP reticle or the Primary Arms 1-6 SFP Reticle. For me, I like the second focal plane reticle better. The second focal plane reticle allows you to do both vertical and horizontal ranging. So it makes the tool become more versatile.
The last state is those in between states, or any state the isn’t 1 or 6 magnification. This is where the Primary Arms 1-6 Raptor in first focal plane absolutely dominates. You’re able to go from any magnification level and still have all of the appropriate bullet drop required.
Watch and see which one we thought won out overall and what the rest of the team had to say on SFP and FFP.
Stay tuned for the next episode when we dive into the insane Primary Arms PLx 1-8 Raptor ACSS M2!
