The Spiritus Systems Thing 1 and Thing 2 were designed to replace the expander wing as front placard expansion. But unlike the expander wing, the Thing 1/2 don’t actually connect into a front placard —unless you make some changes.
The Thing 2 came out onto the market first and Thing 2 has 4 side buckles, 2 on either side. There is also a tegris molle section to connect in whatever legacy molle pouches you’d like. I did a 3 mag pistol pouch and a radio pouch to test it out.
On the opposite side of the tegris you see a large radio pouch on either side. As Spiritus Sytems is working as hard as they can to jam a very specific radio down your throat, this pouch is cut SPECIFICALLY to fit the controls of that radio. But this means any other radio or mags get all bound up as you get hung up on all the weird internal slits of the mag pouch.
The front of the thing 2 has a large loop back molle section to connect into your front placard and the bottom has a slit to allow for a dangler pouch to connect in. Now you CAN connect it in, but it will be almost impossible. I wish you the best of luck on that horrible bit.
Next, we look at the back of the thing 2 where we see how it’s nothing like a thing 2 at all. The entire back is slick. So you can’t connect it into anything besides a front chest rig. And as a duty system, being both offensive and defensive is a must-have.
I don’t understand who in the world would want to add more to a chest rig but is too dainty to want to also have plates. It’s more than a little confusing.
The Thing 1 has a lot of the same design with the same buckles, front loop to connect your placard, and brain-damaged dangler pouch. But the thing 1 ditches the molle tegris and screwy pouches for two larger pouches on either side. Now the pouches are designed to fit the same radio that’s being forced on you but at least it’ll fit two mags securely.
Now I was also told that the design of this was to be used over a slick plate carrier. It is worth noting, placing a chest rig over a slick carrier makes an absolute mess of literally everything.
Instead…CUT THE REAR of the Thing 1 and Thing 2. This frees the rear hook section and now you can actually hook in a dangler without wanting to punch yourself and the whole system connects into a plate carrier.
It makes for a pretty fantastic setup once you make some required upgrades to the product and makes this product useful on more than just a flat range or your made up RECCE scenarios.
